Nobu Toronto: A Symphony of Taste and Sound

Nobu Toronto, the first Canadian outpost of the world-renowned Nobu brand, is more than just a restaurant; it’s a meticulously crafted experience. Founded in 1994 by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, and movie producer Meir Teper, Nobu has become synonymous with adventurous fine dining globally. The Toronto location, a sprawling 10,000-square-foot, two-level, 278-seat establishment, is part of the larger Nobu Hotel, Restaurant & Residences project, adding a sophisticated new dimension to the city’s vibrant nightlife. Beyond its exceptional culinary offerings, Nobu Toronto distinguishes itself with a sumptuous sonic ambiance, made possible by an L-Acoustics X Series professional audio system, expertly designed by local consultant Mulvey & Banani Audio Visual and seamlessly integrated by The 192 Group.

The Challenge

The vision for Nobu Toronto extended beyond typical restaurant acoustics; it aimed to create an immersive environment where every element, including music, contributed to a high-end experience. The primary challenge was to integrate a powerful, event-grade sound system into the venue’s elegant and complex architecture without compromising its aesthetic. The system needed to provide uniform, high-quality audio coverage throughout the cavernous space, which includes a bar, lounge, private dining rooms, a sushi bar, and an outdoor terrace. Furthermore, the audio solution had to be versatile enough to handle both dynamic background music and robust reinforcement for visiting DJs, all while maintaining a sophisticated atmosphere that would not overpower diners. This necessitated a solution that combined high performance with discreet integration, a demanding requirement for a venue of this caliber.

The Solution

To meet these exacting demands, the project team opted for an L-Acoustics X Series professional audio system, a choice that aligned with Nobu’s existing brand standards for quality. Gregory Rushton, Vice President at Mulvey & Banani Audio Visual, highlighted the X Series’ ability to deliver high-performance sound within a remarkably compact footprint, making it ideal for discreet integration into the venue’s design. The 192 Group, led by President Corry McGibbon, seamlessly integrated Mulvey & Banani Audio Visual’s design. The chosen system consists of a distributed array of 22 coaxial X8 enclosures, one larger X12 enclosure, and 25 ultra-compact 5XT speakers, augmented by a dozen ceiling-mounted SB10i subwoofers across the two levels. The entire system is powered by LA7.16i and LA4X amplified controllers, providing precise control and flexibility. The LA7.16i controllers, in particular, proved crucial for managing the complexities of multiple zones within the bar and dining areas, ensuring comprehensive coverage and consistent audio quality. This sophisticated setup allows Nobu Toronto to achieve a “nightclub feeling” with the subs without overwhelming the dining experience, aligning with the evolving supper club and lounge scene in Toronto.

The Result

The L-Acoustics sound system has elevated Nobu Toronto to a new level of sophistication, providing a rich and engaging sonic backdrop that complements its world-class cuisine and elegant ambiance. The discreet installation of the X Series enclosures and SB10i subs ensures that the powerful audio performance is felt, not seen, blending seamlessly with the venue’s luxurious design. The system’s versatility has been proven during high-profile events, including the Toronto International Film Festival and Fashion Toronto, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. The ability to seamlessly transition from curated background music to event-grade sound reinforcement for DJs has solidified Nobu Toronto’s position as a premier destination in the city’s refined nightlife scene.

Project photos

Nobu Toronto represents the next level of sophistication, and it achieves that thanks, in part, to the same kind of sound you’d find at the best concerts, which comes from L-Acoustics.

Papaya Beach Club Chooses L-Acoustics A Series for Weather-Proof Sound

Since 2002, Papaya Beach Club has been a driving force on Croatia’s Zrće Beach, electrifying the European music scene and earning global fame, including a 10th-place ranking on DJ MAG’s World’s Best Clubs list in 2022. Known for hosting legendary festivals and A-list DJs, Papaya Beach Club sought to transcend the limitations of rental equipment and establish its own dedicated, future-proof audio system. This vision led to a partnership with L-Acoustics, renowned for transforming the listening experience, to install a state-of-the-art professional sound system designed to showcase Papaya’s creative potential for performance acoustics and solidify its premier status in the dance music world.

The Challenge

Papaya Beach Club presented many unique design and environmental challenges. Being an open-air club located close to the sea meant saltwater and strong winds had to be considered, all without compromising exceptionally precise sound. Papaya Beach Club Production Manager, Luka Udovičić, explains, “Our location is both our greatest asset and our greatest adversary; we required a system robust enough to withstand the ravages of the sea, and precise enough to deliver crystal-clear sound across our expansive space.”  In addition to the environmental issues, there were significant questions about speaker positioning and installation due to the venue’s distinctive shell-shaped stage, which has an exaggerated height and multi-level layout.

The Solution

Confronting the dual challenges of Papaya Beach Club’s open-air, seaside location, exposure to strong winds, and intricate multi-level design, L-Acoustics Certified Partner for Croatia, Dicroic, developed a bespoke audio solution. Utilizing L-Acoustics Soundvision software, Dicroic meticulously modeled the venue to optimize speaker placement and performance, a critical step given the distinctive white shell-shaped stage and its significant height. This allowed for the strategic positioning of every component, ensuring a harmonious sound field that successfully navigated the venue’s demanding environmental conditions and precise coverage requirements.

The main system features sixteen A15i Focus and two A15i Wide line array speakers for broad coverage. For robust low-end performance, four KS21 and eight KS28 subwoofers are integrated. To ensure uniform coverage throughout the venue, particularly in the elevated VIP areas, six X12 and two X8 speakers serve as fills. DJ monitoring is expertly handled by two A15i Focus and two KS21 subwoofers per side. The entire system is efficiently powered by four LA12X and eight LA4X amplified controllers. This carefully engineered system represents Papaya Beach Club’s commitment to moving beyond rental equipment and investing in a dedicated, state-of-the-art L-Acoustics installation.

The Result

The new L-Acoustics system at Papaya Beach Club has been met with resounding success, providing the “sonic clarity, power, and reliability required for world-class performances”. This critical upgrade ensures Papaya’s continued dominance in Croatia’s music scene, delivering an unparalleled audio experience that will draw top-tier talent and thrill its diverse clientele. Poised for an exciting new era, Papaya Beach Club, fortified by its state-of-the-art L-Acoustics sound system, is set to further solidify its status as a leading global entertainment destination for all types of events.

L-Acoustics Enhances the Tranquil Ambiance of MADE LIM Café

Nestled in Incheon, South Korea, the MADE LIM Café represents a remarkable transformation of a 120-year-old church into a multi-faceted space dedicated to art, dining, and performance. Architects NONE SPACE masterfully reimagined the historic structure, drawing inspiration from the serenity of nature through elements of water, light, sky, garden, and darkness. While thoughtfully preserving the original brickwork and stained-glass windows, the design team aimed to cultivate a new identity for the venue centered around restfulness and immersive experiences. Spanning five floors, the café now offers visitors exhibition areas, diverse dining options, a bakery, and a dedicated performance space hosting weekly jazz, classical, and pop music performances.

The Challenge

The challenge for the MADE LIM design team was to seamlessly integrate a high-quality audio system that would complement the tranquil, nature-inspired themes of each floor. Beyond the requirements of the live performance area, the audio program across the venue included subtle nature soundscapes and calming background music, all intended to deepen the sense of relaxation and immersion. It was crucial that the audio solution delivered clear, natural sound without visually disrupting the carefully curated aesthetic of the space. To achieve this delicate balance, MADE LIM sought the expertise of L-Acoustics Certified Partner Integrator Dreamsystec.

The Solution

Dreamsystec proposed a sophisticated yet discreet audio solution centered around the elegant L-Acoustics Syva and the compact X Series loudspeakers. These models were chosen for their ability to provide consistent and clear audio coverage while seamlessly blending into the unique décor of each area. Following a compelling listening demonstration, the MADE LIM team readily agreed that this combination was the ideal fit for their ambitious objectives. The team at Dreamsystec, under the guidance of Project Manager Yang Jin Seok, collaborated closely with experienced system designers from L-Acoustics Certified Partner Distributor Klausys. Utilizing L-Acoustics Soundvision 3D audio modeling software, they meticulously planned the loudspeaker placements for the various interior spaces and seating arrangements. For the Forest Hall dining and performance space, their design incorporated a pair of L-Acoustics Syva and Syva Low loudspeakers positioned on stage, complemented by four strategically placed X4i coaxial speakers for fill coverage. A single LA4X powers the on-stage system, and throughout the remaining exhibition areas, twenty-three compact X4i speakers were evenly distributed and are driven by six LA2Xi amplified controllers.

The Result

The result is an audio environment that perfectly complements the intended atmosphere of the MADE LIM Café. In the performance space, the Syva system delivers powerful and articulate sound for live musicians, while its refined design enhances the visual appeal of the stage. Across the other floors, the discreetly integrated X4i loudspeakers provide pristine and immersive audio without drawing attention, allowing the nature-inspired soundscapes and calming music to subtly enhance the visitor experience. Dreamsystec also provided comprehensive system and workflow training to the MADE LIM technical team during the opening performances, ensuring a smooth transition for their engineers.

Historic Landmark Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall Gets an L-Acoustics Upgrade

Performing arts venues often showcase famous performers and notable events, but the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall has earned its own renown as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument on the National Register of Historic Places. This storied landmark, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026, boasts impressive Art Deco architecture, but its sound system required modernization. To install a professional sound system worthy of the Shrine’s reputation and A-list performances, 3G Productions selected cutting-edge, pristine sound technology from L-Acoustics.

The Challenge

The primary requirements for The Shrine’s new sound system were immaculate sound quality and consistent coverage. Adaptability was also crucial, as the system needed to function effectively across the Expo Hall and the Auditorium’s various configurations. Given the venue’s 54,000-square-foot capacity for 5,000 attendees, ensuring wide coverage was a significant challenge. Furthermore, the system had to be versatile enough to support a range of events, from globally televised award shows to high-profile rock concerts.

The Solution

To ensure comprehensive and pristine sound coverage throughout the expansive venue, L-Acoustics Soundvision 3D audio prediction software was used to design the optimal professional sound system. Emphasizing versatility, the system was implemented as a fully portable setup, with touring-grade carts and cases enabling seamless storage and effortless relocation to the 6,300-seat Auditorium.

For the Expo Hall, 3G Productions deployed an L-Acoustics system featuring two main hangs of 12 K2 speakers per side, each with three Kara II speakers for down-fill. The KS28 subwoofers, equipped with dollies for easy movement, are typically arranged in five clusters of three in a cardioid configuration, with each cluster topped by a single Kara II for front-fill. Two A15 Focus speakers on either side of the stage provide out-fill for the area under the venue’s deep balcony.

“On the upper balcony, we installed two rolling chariots, each with two KS21 subs and an A15 Focus,” explains Jerrod Cring, Director of AVLI at 3G Productions. “These versatile units can be easily repositioned as stage side-fills or used for outdoor festivals across the Shrine’s grounds. Their integrated mobility ensures they are always performance-ready.” Halfway back in the Expo Hall, two hangs of six Kara II speakers each provide delay coverage. “These arrays, suspended from motors and supported by bespoke carts, guarantee consistent audio quality throughout the entire space,” Cring adds.

Power is supplied by LA-RAK II units with LA12X amplified controllers. A P1 processor in a drive rack at FOH manages the system, which is networked over Milan-AVB. A DiGiCo Quantum225 serves as the house mixing console.

The Result

The new L-Acoustics system has significantly enhanced the Shrine’s audio capabilities, providing both powerful performance and exceptional versatility. The system’s design enables rapid reconfiguration, guaranteeing pristine sound quality for any event, whether it’s a live music performance or a corporate function. With this installation, L-Acoustics has proven effective in providing a top-tier audio solution for a venue with varied and demanding requirements.

Project photos

The Shrine’s top requirements of a new PA were that it deliver both impeccable sound and exceptional coverage. Also important was versatility and being able to use the system in all the different configurations that they have in the Expo Hall and the Auditorium. Based on those things, the L-Acoustics system was a perfect fit for them and is performing incredibly well.

Enchanting Valley Immerses Visitors with L-Acoustics Theme Park Sound System

Nestled in the scenic Puncak region, south of Jakarta, Indonesia, lies the new Enchanting Valley nature-themed park. This unique park presents visitors with a captivating theatrical experience centered around the daily ‘Lila Show,’ a musical focused on nature conservation. The show is performed in the park’s 500-seat outdoor theater, set within a mystical forest environment. To fully engage the audience, the venue required a theme park sound system that could deliver exceptional audio clarity while seamlessly blending into the natural aesthetics and withstanding the challenges of Indonesia’s tropical climate.

The Challenge

Enchanting Valley faced a dual challenge: providing high-quality audio for its theatrical performances and battling the harsh environmental conditions. Indonesia’s tropical climate, characterized by intense downpours and high humidity, poses a significant threat to standard audio equipment. The chosen theme park sound system must be exceptionally durable to withstand these conditions without compromising sound quality. Furthermore, the system had to integrate seamlessly with the stage’s natural design, avoiding any visual distractions from the performance.

The Solution

The park chose an A Series theme park sound system to overcome these challenges. This system, installed by L-Acoustics Certified Partner for Indonesia, PT Gracia Auvindo, was selected for its IP55-rated weather resistance, sonic clarity, and discreet visual profile. The IP55 rating ensures protection against dust and water, which is crucial for year-round outdoor installation. Gracia Auvindo meticulously camouflaged the system within the stage’s forest-inspired elements, ensuring the technology enhanced rather than detracted from the visitor experience.

The Result

Installing the L-Acoustics A Series theme park sound system has proven to be a resounding success. The system delivers powerful, clear sound that envelops the audience, enhancing their immersion in the “Lila Show’s” mystical forest world. The system’s ability to withstand the challenging climate while remaining visually unobtrusive has impressed Taman Safari management, leading them to consider L-Acoustics systems for future venue developments. Visitors can now fully enjoy the theatrical performances without being distracted by technology, experiencing exceptional audio clarity and impact.

L-Acoustics Delivers Nightclub-Caliber Audio with a Professional Sound System for Exclusive Holland Park Home

In the heart of London’s fashionable Holland Park, a five-story residence seamlessly blends timeless elegance with cutting-edge, user-friendly integrated audio-visual technology. As part of a major renovation, the homeowner, a young music enthusiast with a passion for the club scene, sought to recreate the vibrant atmosphere of London’s top nightclubs within the luxurious setting of his own home. This ambitious project required a professional sound system capable of delivering exceptional power and crystal-clear audio, while also integrating discreetly into the home’s aesthetic.

The Challenge

The challenge was to transform the home’s basement into an exclusive private bar and club, suitable for both intimate gatherings and lively parties of up to 60 guests. This required a professional sound system that could deliver the high-energy, immersive sound of a top-tier nightclub. Simultaneously, the system needed to be user-friendly for family and guests and blend seamlessly with the interior design. A significant acoustic challenge was ensuring sound containment within the club space, located beneath a tranquil zen garden, to avoid disrupting the peaceful environment above.

The Solution

To meet these challenges, CEDIA Award-winning integrator SMC collaborated with L-Acoustics to design and install a 25-channel professional sound system. L-Acoustics was chosen for its ability to deliver authentic club sound, akin to that found in the world’s best venues, while maintaining ease of control and integration within a residential setting. The design process involved creating an SPL heat map to precisely match the acoustic profile of the client’s favorite club, ensuring an identical audio experience at home. Subwoofers were cleverly concealed within the furniture to preserve the room’s luxurious aesthetic, leaving only the ceiling-mounted speakers visible.

The Result

The system installation successfully transformed the basement into a bespoke entertainment venue, bringing the energy of a nightclub into the comfort of a private home. The system delivers high-performance sound, aesthetic integrity, and ease of use. The precise acoustic design ensures sound containment, preserving the tranquility of the surrounding areas. The client now enjoys a truly powerful, nightclub-quality audio experience at home, effortlessly controlled with state-of-the-art technology that’s future-proofed for years to come.

What really sets this installation apart is that we’re using the same professional L-Acoustics technology found in leading nightclubs and music venues. This isn’t a residential system trying to approximate club sound – it’s genuine professional-grade audio, thoughtfully integrated into a home environment. The client absolutely loves it and couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out.

An L-Acoustics Professional Sound System Enhances Ambiance and Performance in Atlantis The Royal Lobby

Atlantis The Royal in Dubai has generated significant excitement as a new international destination, setting a new standard for luxury in the hospitality sector. Among its array of high-end features is incorporating a professional L-Acoustics sound system in its expansive lobby. This installation redefines expectations for hotel audio solutions, providing the same caliber of sound experienced in top-tier concert venues while addressing the specific needs of the lobby’s unique design.

The Challenge

The grand lobby of Atlantis The Royal makes an immediate impact with its impressive design. The space spans 262 feet, features 65-foot ceilings, and incorporates striking floor-to-ceiling glass walls. This architectural grandeur presented a notable challenge: achieving concert hall-quality audio reproduction while maintaining the refined visual style, specific color palette, and overall sophistication of one of Dubai’s most remarkable interior spaces.

The Solution

To ensure that the audio system did not detract from the interior design and to preserve the visual integrity of the space, L-Acoustics X Series and S Series speakers, customized with RAL colors, were deployed. These speakers integrate smoothly with the lobby’s architectural elements. The sound system adapts effortlessly, creating a subtle background atmosphere during the day and supporting dynamic evening performances, all while remaining largely unseen by guests. According to Danny Lord, Senior Project Manager at CTME, “L-Acoustics was selected for its ability to integrate with the existing Q-SYS infrastructure, offer custom RAL color options, and provide an elegant design that can be discreetly integrated into the environment.”

The installation utilizes L-Acoustics’ most design-conscious products. The slender Syva colinear arrays, with a width of only 170mm, blend seamlessly into architectural columns and wall edges, while compact Soka speakers merge into the structure’s design features. Fourteen 5XT coaxial enclosures are carefully hidden within the wall moldings, delivering precise coverage to the lobby’s upper areas. This thoughtfully arranged speaker configuration ensures consistent, premium sound throughout the lobby’s extensive area. The system is rounded out by four SB10i and six Syva Low subwoofers for rich, deep low frequencies, along with four LA2Xi and two LA4X amplified controllers for power, and two Auvitran AVBx3 audio networking devices for streamlined integration and control.

The Result

The L-Acoustics system demonstrates that high-caliber audio performance can be achieved in conjunction with the visual elegance expected in upscale hospitality settings. This installation illustrates how a transformative professional sound system enhances even the most luxurious hospitality experiences.

Project photos

The brief called for an audio system to meet the highest professional standards while respecting the lobby’s dramatic architecture. We designed a discreet solution that delivers exceptional versatility, providing both refined background music and concert-quality live performances without compromise – even in a space defined by soaring glass walls and reflective surfaces.

L-Acoustics Pioneers a Re-conceptualized Sporting Arena for a New Elite Golf League

The world of sports entertainment is constantly evolving, and the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, represents a groundbreaking leap forward. This custom-built venue was designed to host TGL, which was presented by SoFi. This first-of-its-kind prime-time team golf league merges cutting-edge technology with live competition to create an unparalleled spectacle for fans. The 250,000-square-foot SoFi Center is a fusion of a state-of-the-art virtual course and a unique short-game complex, demanding a professional sound system capable of delivering much more than just commentary.

The Challenge

The primary challenge in designing the sound system for the SoFi Center was to reimagine the relationship between sound and sport. ESI AV Solutions, the L-Acoustics Certified Provider tasked with the installation, faced the unique challenge of creating an audio environment that could handle everything from crystal-clear commentary to dynamic music integration and even volcanic sound effects. Matt Coombs, Director of ESI AV Solutions, emphasized that this project wasn’t just about another sports venue; it was about creating a virtual reality set within a massive television studio, where technology and top-flight athletic talent converge to redefine golf entertainment. The goal was to move beyond traditional golf spectatorship and create an exciting entertainment experience, requiring a professional sound system that could deliver both power and precision.

The Solution

A comprehensive L-Acoustics professional sound system was designed and implemented to meet these challenges. The system features 14 primary arrays with two L-Acoustics A15i loudspeakers and KS21i subwoofers to cover the main audience areas. For the field, two additional hangs of one A15i loudspeaker were installed. The entire system is powered by the LA7.16i amplified controllers.

VIP areas and suites also received meticulous attention to sound design. Eighteen ultra-compact L-Acoustics 5XT coaxial speakers, powered by LA2Xi, were discreetly wall-mounted in the suites for pre- and post-event speech. VIP boxes utilize eight wall-mounted X6i speakers, while owners’ boxes each feature a pair of larger X8i speakers. Furthermore, 44 5XT speakers, powered by LA 7.16i, were strategically placed around the interior of the field to provide under-balcony fills for the stands, focusing on player microphone audio. The A Series handles speech and music for the stands. This distributed design, incorporating Milan-AVB networking technology, was crucial for ensuring perfect synchronization and exceptional sound quality throughout the venue.

Keys Nightclub Strikes the Right Chord with a New L-Acoustics Professional Sound System

The Sunset Strip in West Hollywood boasts a rich history steeped in music, and the newly opened Keys venue is the latest chapter in that storied tale. Debuted by The h.wood Group in August, Keys is located in a space with a storied past, formerly known as Gazzarri’s Hollywood a Go Go nightclub, where famous bands like The Doors and Van Halen once graced the stage. Today, Keys aims to capture the glamour and vibrant energy of Los Angeles’ nightlife as a multi-level music venue. Recognizing the importance of sound in this legendary location, Keys chose Clair Global’s Eighth Day Sound integration team to install a state-of-the-art L-Acoustics professional sound system.

The Challenge

Keys presented a complex set of audio challenges stemming from its architectural design. The venue is a multi-level space with distinct room geometries across its three stories, each requiring tailored audio solutions. According to system designer Demetrius Moore, the primary challenge was to create a versatile professional sound system that could deliver high-quality audio for both EDM/dance music and live performances. This meant the system needed to provide impactful sound for dance club experiences while also offering the fidelity and clarity necessary for live music events. Furthermore, the system had to be flexible enough to function as a unified setup across all levels or as independent systems for each floor, accommodating different event needs and spatial configurations. The varying acoustic environments within the venue, including the main floor with opera box-style balcony fixtures, added to the complexity of achieving consistent and optimal sound coverage.

The Solution

To address these challenges, Clair Global’s Eighth Day Sound integration team designed and installed a comprehensive L-Acoustics A Series professional sound system, carefully customized for each area of the venue. On the main floor, the system features three A15i loudspeakers per side to provide powerful and clear main coverage. To deliver the impactful low-end crucial for dance music, eight ground-stacked SB18 IIi subwoofers were integrated into the face of the DJ stage, configured in four stacks of two high. Coaxial X8 loudspeakers were strategically installed as delays to ensure even coverage throughout the space, while smaller 5XT speakers were used as fills to address specific areas such as the balcony, creating a 360-degree surround sound effect. The second level was equipped with a system comprising twelve X8 loudspeakers, split into a left-right configuration, and paired with both SB18 IIi and SB15m subwoofers to cater to its specific acoustic needs. L-Acoustics LA12X amplified controllers were used to power the A15i loudspeakers, ensuring efficient and precise control of the system. This combination of L-Acoustics components and configurations allowed for both independent operation of each level and the ability to combine them into a single, cohesive system.

The Result

The installation of the L-Acoustics professional sound system has significantly enhanced the audio experience at Keys. The system’s versatility allows the venue to seamlessly transition between live music performances and high-energy dance events. According to Demetrius Moore, the new system delivers “fantastic” sound for both live and recorded music. The sound system not only meets the technical needs of the space but also pays homage to the venue’s rich musical history. The improved audio quality has impressed patrons and elevated Keys’ status in West Hollywood’s competitive nightlife scene.

Patrons who have heard the new system at Keys are shocked to hear sound this good in this part of town, which has a huge legacy in the entertainment business.

L-Acoustics Immersive Hyperreal: A Tony-Winning Immersive Audio Experience in The Outsiders

The 2024 Broadway production of The Outsiders garnered critical acclaim and received 12 Tony Award nominations, including wins for Best Musical and Best Sound Design of a Musical, which was awarded to Sound Designer Cody Spencer. This production, staged at the historic Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, features the NYC Theater District’s inaugural deployment of L-Acoustics L Series loudspeakers and utilizes L-ISA immersive sound technology. Spencer’s innovative approach delivered a groundbreaking immersive audio experience to support the acclaimed story.

The Challenge

The historic Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, originally a vaudeville venue, presented significant acoustic challenges for the sound design of The Outsiders. Designed for omnidirectional voice projection, the venue’s architecture resulted in complex and unpredictable reflections, requiring meticulous speaker placement to mitigate unwanted reflections and comb filtering. The production’s elaborate stage design, including a rain curtain, necessitated relocating the front-of-house speaker positions. The sound design presented a unique challenge in creating an immersive sonic experience that would do justice to the beloved story and characters of The Outsiders.

The Solution

To address the complex acoustic challenges of the Jacobs Theatre and create an immersive soundscape that would draw the audience into the world of The Outsiders, sound designer Cody Spencer and his team utilized L-Acoustics’ Soundvision software and a comprehensive array of L-Acoustics loudspeakers. Soundvision played a critical role in defining the boundaries of coverage, ensuring even sound distribution across all seating areas while minimizing reflections.

Main System
The main system, focused on the orchestra and front mezzanine, features five hangs of L-Acoustics’ new L2D line array loudspeakers. These were chosen for their long throw capabilities, which proved essential after the front-of-house speaker positions were moved further out to accommodate the production’s elaborate stage design. This change, visualized in Soundvision, revealed that the L2D provided better coverage of the prime seating areas than traditional line arrays. Two centrally flown sub arrays of three KS21 subwoofers each are augmented by two more KS21 positioned under the stage, delivering powerful low-frequency support. Seven spatialized X8 coaxial speakers serve as front-fills for the main floor seats.

Balcony Delay System
The balcony delay system employs five Scene arrays of two A15 Focus enclosures flanking Extension arrays of two A15 Wide. This configuration ensures clear and consistent sound for the upper levels of the theater.

Surround System and Fills
A combination of X8 and A10 enclosures provides surround sound for the main system, while four Syva enclosures, two on each side, deliver surround sound to the balcony. Various combinations of X12, X8, and 5XT speakers are strategically deployed as fill speakers throughout the theater to ensure even coverage and address specific acoustic needs. For example, a row of 5XT speakers covers the front of the orchestra, while X8 speakers fill in the back of the orchestra under the overhang.

Stage Monitoring
The stage monitoring system is extensive, comprising six X12 flown as stage side-fills, six X12 as overheads, ten X4i for downstage fill, one X8 on each side of the proscenium arch as proscenium fills, and twelve 5XT as under-platform monitors. This comprehensive setup guarantees that actors and musicians on stage have clear and detailed audio, further enhancing the immersive experience.

Control and Processing
The entire system is powered by a combination of LA7.16, LA12X, and LA4X amplified controllers. A redundant pair of L-ISA Processor II manages the sound system, creating an immersive audio environment. Milan-AVB networking simplifies signal routing and system configuration, especially given the complex arrangement of amplifiers and speakers throughout the theater.

The Result

The Outsiders reflects Broadway’s increasing investment in more immersive audio, with technologies like L-ISA at the forefront. L-ISA simplifies the implementation of immersive soundscapes, offering sound designers, mix engineers, and artists unprecedented creative control. For instance, the scene where the lead character is kicked in the face utilizes L-ISA to create a stunning effect of ringing ears surrounding the audience, placing them directly in the character’s experience. By deploying L-ISA, the production immerses the audience in the story, creating a more profound connection and enhancing the emotional impact of key moments.

Project Photos

The reason I chose to use L-ISA is that, early on, in communication with my director, music department, and choreography team, we wanted the audience to be enveloped by the sound. With much of the show, the audience is ‘inside’ the actors’ heads—it’s a play in which much of the action is being recalled by characters instead of happening in the moment. Using L-ISA, we’re able to get people feeling the sound from all around them at all times.
